Chanute (1892) and apparently identically (1894) describes this craft.
The Lilienthal museum web site lists the inventor as Carlngford, the title as "Flugapparat", and leaves the country unstated. It took a while to match that record to this patent, but it does seem to be a near-perfect match, with little ambiguity. The Lilienthal museum's researcher, identified as Seifert, refers to a "source number 1" page 192, and leave a paragraph of description. Translated to English and rephrased for brevity, that description is:
- The apparatus was a fixed-wing aircraft with propeller and hull, apparently without a rudder. The wing was in the shape of a falcon's, slightly curved upwards at the bottom parallel to the direction of flight. The propeller was mounted in front. Wing pitch was 45 degrees. Carlingford also described a new starting method: hanging on the rope between 2 high masts, the apparatus was to be triggered by the pilot in a dive and then fly on with the engine and propeller.
Moedebeck's Pocket book, page 382, lists this patent, or the associated project.
- Inventor country: Ireland
