Institut aérodynamique de Koutchino
The Institut aérodynamique de Koutchino was one of the first aerodynamics research laboratories. It was founded by Dimitri Pavlovitch Riabouchinsky at his estate 18 kilometers west of Moscow, on the train line to Nijni-Novgorod.[1] [2]
Riabouchinsky was director of the institute and Nikolay Yegorovich Zhukovsky was the chief scientist.[1]
A hundred thousand roubles were spent initially on the facility, which included a residence for staff and a large experimental hall 100' by 43' by 28'.[3]
It published the Bulletin de l'Institut Aérodynamique de Koutchino in French.
The institute conducted air resistance experiments in a 48' cylindrical tube; it also made several unmanned balloon ascensions which used electric light to illuminate clouds.[3]
- Name in Russian? Аэродинамический институт ...
- Russian wiki and perhaps other link this institution with Центральный аэрогидродинамический институт (Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute), also associated with Zhukovsky and located west of Moscow. Yet the location of this Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute is south of the location of Kuchino and the founding date given is usually 1918; so the continuity of this institution through and after the revolution. (w:ru:Центральный аэрогидродинамический институт)
- w:ru:Кучино (микрорайон) (location of the institute, near Moscow)
- The w:Kuchino railway station (w:ru:Кучино (платформа)) seems to correspond with the original location of the institute
