[Brockett apparently in error has Études for Étude.]

A review of heavier-than-air aircraft types emphasizing airplane and helicopter, with diagrams and equations on aerodynamics and design. Aviation is defined at the outset as the art of imitating the bird, or more generally, heavier-than-air aerial navigation. This definition contrasts aviation with aérostation. Aviation is then divided into four categories, Orthoptères, Aéroplanes, Hélicoptères, and Appareils mixtes.

De Cantelou is a cipher, with no biographical data emerging from searches. The book was panned in a review for the Bulletin de la Société industrielle de Rouen by Marcel Vallemont.
