Almerico da Schio
Count Almerico da Schio was an Italian aero inventor. He participated in the International Aeronautical Congress of 1906 at Milan and was a member of the Societa Aeronautica Italiana.
According to historian Guy Hartcup, Count da Schio built the first airship in Italy:
Small in size, it differed from the French non-rigids in that it was not equipped with ballonets, but had an elastic envelope similar to the first British army airship decribed on page 52. Italia, as she was named, made her first ascent on 21 June 1905 at Schio, near Venice, in the presence of the King and Queen of Italy. The flight lasted for 35min, but the airship did not return to her point of departure. A few more flights were made before she was deflated.[1]
Da Schio was president of the Accademia Olimpica in Venice and founder of a meteorological network for northeast Italy.[2]
