The Aero Club de Portugal (AeCP) was founded in 1909.[1][2]
The first paragraphs of the club's self-described history, translated and condensed:[1][3]
- It was founded on December 11, 1909. Its provisional headquarters were at the Portuguese Civil Engineers Association, in Terreiro do Paço. It started with 30 members, mostly engineering officers, and Colonel Fernando Eduardo Serpa Pimentel was appointed as its first president.
- Its first member, the then Captain Pedro Fava Ribeiro de Almeida, would later become known as the "Major of the Alverca Fair", for having been the first Director of the Aeronautical Material Park. The main functions of the AeCP were to share aeronautical information, to start relationships with similar entities abroad, to organize conferences, kite contests, to publish articles, to organize an aeronautical library, and in general to promote and develop aviation in Portugal.
- Between 1911 and 1913 the Aero Club held numerous lectures and published numerous articles on aeronautics. In 1911, AeCP launched its first aeronautical publication, the Boletim do Aero-Club de Portugal, which gave rise to the Revista Aeronautica the following year. In 1913 the AeCP joined the FAI, making Portugal the 18th country registered in it.
- In 1913 a bill was drafted for the AeCP to be considered a public utility institution.
