Gustave-Louis-Marie de Ponton d'Amécourt
Gustave-Louis-Marie de Ponton d'Amécourt was an aero inventor, Viscount, coin-collector, and archaeologist, also well-trained in linguistics. He was the founder and president of the "Société française de numismatique" (numismatique having to do with coin study and collection). He was noted for his study of Merovingian currency.
He was an important aero inventor. His work was crucial to developments leading to the helicopter. He coined the term "hélicoptère". He served as president of the Société Aérostatique et Météorologique de France and of its successor, the Société française de navigation aérienne. He is associated with the location Paris (29, rue Sainte-Anne, Seine).
D'Amécourt, in 1863, published "La conquête de l'air par l'hélice", that is, "The Conquest of the Air by the Propeller".
